Street Knowledge

UrbnLit's journey from street vendors to library shelves and six-figure book deals is a case of culture bubbling from the bottom up. That is especially true in New York, where the genre, like Hiphop music, was developed by, for and about people in southeast Queens and other mostly black neighborhoods that have struggled with drugs, crime and economic stagnation.
Welcome to Urban Literature...

UrbnLit Book- Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeMission:
It is the mission of Urban Literature, LLC. to provide vehicles of expressions for exceedingly talented urban writers, actors, filmmakers, musicians, graphic artist, etc. that are often denied the opportunity to showcase their talents. Our concept and strategy to accomplish this is also a paradox in that we are a company that's been around since 1996, but new to the literary publishing scene. However, we are counting on our guerrilla marketing experience and innovative artistic campaign styles, perfected during our times as a magazine publisher, the producer of North Carolina's first urban film festival (the Urban Literary Film Festival; 2003- 2007), and various Hiphop events and showcase, to become the worlds leader in publishing "Urban Novella."

Publishing Urban Novella:
Wikipedia defines novella as - a written, fictional, prose narrative longer than a novelette but shorter than a novel. While there is some disagreement as to what length defines a novella, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Nebula Awards for science fiction define the novella as having a word count between 17,500 and 40,000. Example of well known novellas are "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde," "Of Mice and Men," and "Breakfast at Tiffany's." We here at Urban Literature will define our novella's as short novels with a word count between 20,000 and 60,000 words.

The 3rd Renaissance :: Rebirth :: Revival:
Renaissance is define as a movement or period of vigorous artistic and intellectual activity and over the past 30 plus years, history will define Hiphop and its impact as a renaissance on a global scale. It is our belief that we are in the early stages of the "3rd Renaissance" where Hiphops artistic influence is still in its infancy stage as it pertains to literature. For the Black community and its accepted and documented American artistic contribution, the Harlem Renaissance lasted a brief time (1919 until the early or mid 1930s). Therefore everything before the Harlem Renaissance would be considered the Black communities 1st Renaissance and everything after, i.e. the Hiphop movement and the artistic byproducts would be defined as the 3rd!!!
