Hiphop plays range from single-actor monologue plays, to reinterpretations of classical or biblical texts, to musicals and dance shows. Often, the use of complex language and overt rhythm in speaking hiphop theatre texts has drawn parallels to actors speaking Shakespearean verse.

"Are you the next Sister Souljah, Donald Goines, Omar Tyree, or Nikki Turner? Are you a superstar urban literature writer, looking for an opportunity to showcase your imagination?"

Welcome to the 1st edition UrbnLit Creative Writing Contest... Below are 30 titles choosen from Hiphop tracks and popular urban slang terms and your goal is to write the best short story possible, to have fun writing it, and to be as creative as possible. From cautionary tales, to suspense, love triangles, fantasy, sci-fi, or simple misdirection in following the life of an everyday Joe that keeps us on our toes from page to page... make us laugh, cry, and beg for more!!! ? 

If you elect to participate in this writing competition, please fill out the entry form and select your top 3 titles you would like to write a short story about. This is a first come first server format, so don't delay in mailing in your entry form to lock in your preferred story title. If all 3 of your preferred titles have been selected by the time your entry form is received, we will email you the titles that are left that you may choose from! 

  • The winner of this contest will win $200 and have their short story scripted into a stageplay.  All published writers will receive 25 copies of the printed version of the short story collection to either sell ($1 recommended) or give away, their choice.
  • The short story should be no less than 3000 words and not to exceed 5000 words! Anything less or more, is subject to disqualification by the contest administration! 
  • Explicit language is accepted; however, PLEASE DON'T ABUSE IT!!! Pornographic language is not acceptable. Anything that can be viewed as X-Rated will be disqualified and entry fees will not be returned!
  • Of the 30 possible entries, a max of 12 will be published in a special edition print to be titled later. The special edition will be made available to the public and a poll will be placed on the site to assist in determining the winner of the contest. In other words, the more people that have read your short story and vote (40%), the better your chances of winning combined with our judges scoring (60%).
  • Compelling characteristics to take into consideration but not necessarily the rules when writing urban literature

This contest (PHASE 1) is open to Guilford County residents only!!! Voting is global as we will make available, an ebook of the short story contest.

Your entry must be an original, unpublished work by you, with an urban/Hiphop demographics in mind. 
Send as many entries as you like. Any applicant 16yrs. old and under will need a parnet or guardian to also sign and date this entry form. 

If you do not win the prize, your entries may still be considered for further development. 
At no point do you lose your rights to your work.

Entry forms received before March 13th (standard deadline- $15). Entry forms postmarked between March 14th and April 3rd/DUE TO THE SLOWER THAN EXPECTED SUBMISSIONS, THE CONTEST DEADLINE HAS BEEN MOVED TO MAY 1st (final deadline- $25). Also, there will need to be a minimum of 10 submitted stories to have a valid competition. Anything less, by the time this contest ends, and we will refund your entry fees.
